Magical Christmas Activities for Families to Enjoy This Festive Season

With Christmas just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to start planning festive days out and booking those must-do experiences. Over the years, we’ve tried lots of wonderful Christmas activities as a family, and I wanted to share some of our favourites to inspire your holiday plans. I’d also love to hear your suggestions—what’s on your Christmas bucket list this year?

1. LaplandUK

LaplandUK is the ultimate Christmas experience for families. Tickets usually sell out very early (sometimes a year in advance!), but if you’re lucky you might still find giveaway tickets closer to the date. We’ve been four times and it truly never loses its magic. From meeting Father Christmas to exploring the enchanted forest, it’s a memory-making day your kids will treasure forever.

2. A Christmas Trip to London (or Your Nearest City)

One of our family traditions is heading into London at Christmas. The city comes alive with twinkling lights, magical displays, and festive shopping spots. Some of our must-visit stops include:

  • Covent Garden – perfect for soaking up the festive atmosphere, admiring the giant Christmas tree, and browsing the stalls.
  • Fortnum & Mason – a Christmas dreamland for foodie treats, tree decorations, and luxury gifts.
  • Selfridges – this year we’re excited about the Jellycat event.
  • Harrods – it’s been years since I last went, and I can’t wait to take the girls for the first time.

If London is too far, try your closest city—you’ll likely find Christmas markets, festive shop displays, and plenty of holiday cheer.

3. Lap of Lights at Silverstone

If you’re looking for a unique Christmas experience, the Lap of Lights is unforgettable. We drove around Silverstone at night, Christmas lights twinkling to the soundtrack of Fleetwood Mac’s The Chain. It was magical (yes, I cried happy tears!). Nowadays, you can also hop out afterwards for ice skating, food, and festive drinks.

4. Land of Lights

This is one of our favourite family traditions. Wander through glowing lantern displays, step into magical portals, and snap plenty of photos. It’s fun, affordable, and kids absolutely love it. We’ve gone with friends a few times and will definitely be back again this year.

5. Ice Skating

Few things feel more Christmassy than gliding (or wobbling!) across the ice. In London, Somerset House and the Natural History Museum have two of the most iconic rinks. But if you can’t make it to the capital, check for local pop-up rinks near you.

6. Visit a Christmas Garden Centre

Garden centres at Christmas are magical in their own way. From sparkling decorations to festive displays, they’re the perfect place to pick up ornaments, sip a hot chocolate, and even shop for artisan treats. A slower-paced but very festive outing.

7. See a Ballet or Pantomime

The theatre is a wonderful way to add a touch of tradition to the season. Whether you go for a classic pantomime (great for kids) or a breathtaking Christmas ballet like The Nutcracker, it’s an enchanting way to spend an evening.

8. Explore a Christmas Market

Christmas markets are a must-do every year. We love visiting our local National Trust site, which combines a light trail with a festive market full of seasonal food, handmade gifts, and twinkling lights. Wherever you are, check for nearby Christmas markets—they’re perfect for soaking up holiday spirit.

✨ Whether it’s skating under fairy lights, strolling through lanterns, or sipping mulled wine at a market, these Christmas activities make the season extra special. What’s your favourite festive tradition?
