Our Family Ski Trip

We’re incredibly lucky to have a family apartment in the Alps. It’s something I’m genuinely grateful for – beautiful views, crisp mountain air, and the chance to ski in one of the most stunning regions in the world. You’d think we’d be there all the time, right? But since having the twins, we’ve only managed one visit. Life just gets busy, and planning a trip like this takes more energy than it sounds – especially as a solo parent.

Skiing with small children isn’t exactly the most relaxing kind of holiday. There’s the flight, followed by a long taxi ride or drive up into the mountains. It’s a bit of a trek. That said, now that the girls are older, it’s becoming easier and much more fun.

Learning Together

To help build our confidence before our next Alps adventure, we’ve been going to a real snow indoor ski centre here in the UK. We book private lessons as a family, and honestly, it’s been such a great way to learn together. There’s something really lovely about sharing new experiences, laughing through the wobbles, and watching the girls grow more confident each time.

We are planning a return to the Alps soon, but we want to squeeze in a few more lessons first—just to feel a little steadier on the slopes.

What It Actually Takes to Ski as a Family

One of the huge benefits of having our own place in the Alps is that we don’t have to budget for accommodation, which is a massive help. But skiing still comes with its costs. Equipment hire is a must – boots, skis, helmets and unless you’re skiing regularly, it’s not worth buying, especially for kids who grow out of everything in five minutes.

We’ve already got jackets, salopettes, gloves, thermals, and goggles, so that’s one less thing to worry about. (Top tip: don’t skimp on good ski socks, and pack a little anti-bac spray for shared kit – it comes in handy more than you’d think.)

The Last Time We Went…

Last time we hit the Alps, the girls did ski school every morning for two hours, even on Christmas Day – which aided to me losing half a stone from the sheer effort of getting them kitted up and out the door each day. Luckily, the ski school was right opposite our apartment, so I could watch from the window and cheer them on with a coffee in hand.

Afternoons were spent on the nursery slopes – practising, sledging, and soaking in the scenery. It was such a special trip, even if it wasn’t the most restful break.

Skiing as a Single Parent

As a solo mum, I’ll be honest – I usually lean toward holidays that offer a bit of relaxation. Ski trips are full-on. But there’s something so rewarding about skiing as a family. It’s not just a sport; it’s an experience. And I totally get why so many parents want to pass it down to their kids. It builds confidence, resilience, and lifelong memories.

While I’m not a seasoned skier myself (yet!), I love watching the girls learn and thrive on the slopes. Hopefully, it won’t be too long until we’re back in the mountains. We just need to juggle a few logistics – but it’s definitely on the cards.

Would you take your kids skiing? I’d love to hear your experiences – whether it’s your first trip or you’re regulars on the slopes!
