If you’re planning a family trip to London and want a theatre experience that will take your breath away, The Lion King at the Lyceum Theatre is a must-see. With its stunning costumes, powerful music, and unforgettable performances, this West End production has been wowing audiences since 1999. In this review, I share our personal experience seeing the show for my twins’ 10th birthday – including ticket tips, where to eat nearby, and why this was one of the most magical days we’ve ever had together.
A Dream Come True for Me and the Twins
I fell in love with Disney’s The Lion King back in 1994. My dad took me to an art gallery in Hampstead Heath, London to watch a special premiere, and from that day, I became the biggest fan. The story, the music, the characters – it’s always been one of my all-time favourite Disney films.
So naturally, when my twins were born, it became one of the first Disney films they ever watched. Ever since then, I’ve dreamt of taking them to see the stage musical when they were old enough to really appreciate it.
Well, the day finally came – for their 10th birthday! And where better than the original UK production at the Lyceum Theatre in London, which has been home to The Lion King since its West End premiere in 1999.

Planning the Perfect Day
I booked our tickets months in advance and was thrilled to secure seats in the second row from the front – the perfect spot for an unforgettable experience.
Before the show, we made a little day of it, wandering around our favourite London area, Covent Garden. We popped into the Royal Opera House café for refreshments (the prices there are surprisingly reasonable!) and took in the atmosphere. There are also other lovely spots nearby, like the Davies Terrace Bar, which offers stunning views over Covent Garden.
A Special Pre-Show Surprise
To make the day extra magical, I pre-ordered The Lion King merchandise bags for the girls. Each one came with a mug, poster, key ring, and programme, all tucked inside a gorgeous Lion King-branded tote bag. It was the perfect pre-show treat to get them buzzing with excitement.

The Show Itself – Pure Magic
From the moment the lights went down and the opening notes of “Circle of Life” began, we were completely captivated. Our seats gave us an incredible view, and the cast’s interaction with the audience made it feel as though we were truly part of the performance.
The costumes, choreography, and staging were breathtaking – so much so that I got emotional and cried more than once. I’ve seen my fair share of theatre productions, but this one… this was something truly special.
When the curtain fell, the entire audience erupted into a standing ovation, and we were cheering as loudly as we could. It felt like the perfect culmination of a long-held dream.
A Birthday to Remember
Seeing The Lion King live at the Lyceum Theatre wasn’t just a show – it was an experience we’ll treasure forever. It was the perfect way to celebrate the twins’ 10th birthday and create a memory they’ll carry with them for years to come.
If you’re a fan of the film, the stage version will blow you away. And if you’ve never seen it… well, all I can say is, book those tickets. You won’t regret it.
